Can I use MICROLAX® every day?

MICROLAX® product shows limited absorption by the body and therefore has a good safety profile. This means it can be used every day. However, it is not intended for long-term use. What can I do if there is no bowel movement after 15 minutes?

Everybody’s digestive system is different. There can be a delay in some cases before the solution takes effect. There have been no harmful effects reported if more than one does is used. If you still obtain no relief from constipation after using a second mini-enema, please consult a doctor, who will be able to determine the cause of the constipation and prescribe the best possible alternative treatment.

How do I use MICROLAX®?

MICROLAX® is really easy to use in a squatting position or in your usual position on the toilet. Twist the top of the tube off, and after lubricating the tip with a small drop of the solution, insert the neck fully into the rectum. You will hardly feel the tube as you insert it and this process is completely harmless. Now simply squeeze the entire contents of the tube into the rectum, and keep squeezing the mini-tube as you remove it from the rectum. After use, stand up and lightly tense the cheeks of your bottom to stop the solution from leaking out. Important: Allow the solution to work for approx. 5 minutes to get the best possible effect. After use, dispose of the mini-tube. After only 5-15 minutes, you should have a gentle, normal bowel movement without pain.

Are interactions with other medication likely?

No, there have been no reports of interactions with other medication.

How does MICROLAX® act?

The 5 ml mini-tube is discreet and easy to use hygienically, and takes effect quickly in the rectum. The active substances sodium citrate and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate release the water compounded in the stool, thus softening the stool. Reliable relief is obtained within 5 to 15 minutes. The mini-enema acts locally, and  has no effect on intestinal activity. Therefore the product has a good safety profile and limited side effects.

Can I use MICROLAX® even if I have chronic constipation?

No. MICROLAX® is not intended for chronic constipation. Please always consult a doctor if constipation persists.

Does MICROLAX® always work?

MICROLAX® takes effect if there is a stool in the rectum which can be softened. If you are fasting, dieting or reducing your food intake, it may take several days for the rectum to fill and for MICROLAX® to take effect.

...on constipation in general

How often should you have a bowel movement?

Everyone has their own rhythm of digestion, depending on age and diet, and therefore their own personal understanding of normal digestion. What counts in each case is your own personal well-being. Doctors speak of constipation if evacuation occurs less than three times a week.

What is understood by constipation?

Though there is a medical definition, everyone has their own personal understanding of what they mean by constipation. If you are used to passing a stool every day, for example, if you go just a day without a bowel movement, you may well feel unpleasantly constipated. Older people and women generally suffer more frequently from the symptoms. Doctors speak of constipation if evacuation occurs less than three times a week.

Why do older people suffer more often from constipation than younger people?

Constipation is not an illness but a symptom. As we get older, the contractions (peristalsis) within the intestines may weaken, resulting in the stool remaining within the intestine for longer. This leads to an increased probability that more liquid will be extracted from the stool, the longer it remains in the intestine and therefore causes the stool to harden. Also, with increasing age, many people undergo not only physical changes but also changes in lifestyle that can lead to constipation.
